UM v WMU Long Ass Recap

UM v WMU Recap, but mostly random shit

This post will be my thoughts on the second WMU game combined with thoughts on the season. The game was a pretty good representation of the season as a whole. Basically, these will be my random thoughts on the game.

Michigan came out trying to assert themselves physically in this game. However, this is not the NHL where a team like the Bruins can manhandle others through fights and post-whistle scrums. In the NCAA, that is just dumb. If there is a cheap shot, or other good reason, go right ahead, but this was not the case here.

Early on, Guptill took a puck, that he had in perfect shooting position, onto his backhand and dropped for a following forward. The resulting shot was blocked, and the puck went the other way. The announcer said this was "too fancy." He echoed something I have said all year. One of the (many) problems with this team is that they are too deferential. They look to pass before shoot. I don't know if they don't have the confidence, or what, but they need a forward to step up and assert himself. Guptill is a fine candidate, and has proven he can score at this level. When they do shoot, they can't finish.

Another problem from this team this year has been grinding. If you need to see what grinding is, try to remember Luke Glendenning. He always dug for the puck in the corners, and battled in front of the net. Too often, Michigan players lose 1 on 1 battles, which result in goals. A play that jumps out in my mind from earlier this year involved Deblois. The puck carrier came out of the corner, and Deblois couldn't outmuscle him. As a result, he held the guy, and got a penalty. Even while holding the opposing player, Deblois still couldn't keep him from getting to the net and scoring. Guys just don't win battles. Tonight, Moffie couldn't win a battle against a guy lying on his stomach.

I'm going to take a page from Don Cherry's book, and say that a big problem with this team is that there are not enough Canadians. They need a few guys from friggin Moosejaw, SK who grew up throwing hay bales, and know the meaning of hard work. Too many Americans on this team.

Copp's goal was a good one, good movement from Trouba, down to the corner, then to the slot where Copp fired it home. I give a lot of credit to Trouba on this one. Not just for the assist, but also because Copp was so wide open. The high forward on the PK was determined to keep Trouba from getting a good scoring chance, and as a result drifted too high, leaving Copp wide open in a high percentage scoring area. On another note, I was in 1st Pres Church and saw a sign listing boy scouts of the year, and Copp was on the list. So yeah, too many nice guys on this team. Need a few more pricks from the prairie.

I missed the first 5 minutes of the 2nd because Sutton and I had a froyo date at Amer's. Finally broke 10 oz on the yogurt. By that I mean I got less than 10 oz for the first time. Sutton only got 11. Maybe someday he'll break his record of 16.4 oz.

This team left Janny out to dry all game. Maybe he prefers watching from the bench. At least he can't get screwed by his teammates there.

And, to illustrate my frustration, here are my notes on Kevin Lynch, who I like as a player, but has got to show some discipline. "good hit by lynch. always gets big hits, but just doesn't do enough offensively. and a stupid fucking penalty on lynch for roughing. nice fucking leadership from an alternate captain. guy on western didn't deserve to go. lynch did everything on that. he has done this all fucking year." I would still love the Bruins to trade for Lynch, and develop him as a bottom-6 forward who is a solid middleweight.

Chiasson has got to bury the puck off a sweet feed from Nieves. It shows that he hasn't played a ton this year.

Clare also shows his rust with an awful fucking pinch that led to a 2 on 1 goal from Hargrove. I love big hits, but without a forward high in support, just give up the offensive blue line.

I stopped paying attention in the 3rd because I found an article about how much the Celtics suck.

More Random Thoughts:

Who would have thought Jack Johnson would suck so more than Milan Lucic at doing commercials.

I keep thinking this game is at Yost because everything these meathead Western fans do is right out of the Michigan fan playbook. They even play Can't Turn Me Loose, but just look like dumbasses trying to dance.

I love Rutlege's hair. I hope he turns into a good player so Michigan has at least one half decent goalie.

Every time Kessel touches the puck I think dirty thoughts about Dougie Hamilton, Tyler Seguin, and Jared Knight. This must be what being a teenage Bruins pinkhat fan feels like

Does this asshat western fan really have a thrashers shirt on? A let's go broncos chant. Real fucking original jerk off.

No, I am not a CCHA superfan. I happen to think that the CCHA is a fucking joke that made it official policy to fuck Michigan because they were going to B1G hockey

I think Colton Hargrove was getting touched inappropriately by the Western trainer. Should we call somebody? I'd hate the Bruins prospect to get damaged emotionally.

Announcers talking about effort from Walters, and that's why he wears the C. I remember what it was like to see the captain working harder than everyone else. Man I miss Luke Glendenning.

Holy shit that turned out longer than intended. Maybe Michigan can try winning a game next week against State so I can at least say good things. And, maybe I will try to write less.
